Gig cancelled? What you can and can't get back

When a gig is cancelled, the ticket refund is usually automatic. The train and hotel are a different story: there's normally no legal right to get them back, so what you recover depends on what you booked and how fast you act.

1. Your ticket

2. Your hotel and travel

Citizens Advice says fans won't usually get any travel or accommodation costs back unless they were part of a package which included the ticket. Nobody owes you the train or the room, so the only question is what your booking lets you cancel.

  1. Check every booking's cancellation deadline today. Flexible hotel rates are often free to cancel until lunchtime on the day. Anytime and Off-Peak train tickets can be refunded until 23:59 the day before you travel.
  2. Cancel what's free first. Then look at what can be changed: an Advance train ticket can't be refunded, but can move to another date for £10 plus any fare difference, which is useful if the gig is postponed.
  3. For non-refundable rooms, ask anyway. Phone the hotel, say the event's been cancelled, and ask to move the date. Some will.
  4. Airbnb: the host's own policy applies, and Airbnb's disruptive-events policy specifically excludes event cancellations. Message your host.

3. How much notice you'll get

Less than you'd hope. In our sample of 26 UK cancellations and postponements in 2026, half gave 30 days' notice or less, and almost a quarter gave under a week. Illness and promoter failure gave the least warning; shows cancelled for low ticket sales usually gave 30 to 77 days.
